It is a serious thing
just to be alive
on this fresh morning
in the broken world.
Sometimes, there are no words. Sometimes, there are only feelings, and so, that is what you settle into. For however long it takes, even if that is for the rest of your life.
I received a text at 5 am New Year’s morning from the city stating there had been “a mass casualty event” on Bourbon Street and to stay away from the area. You know the rest. The last thing I want to do is make this about me so I won’t write about how I feel anytime soon. Honestly, I don’t even want to.
It so happened, on the same day, I ran across this Mary Oliver quote online that helped me see a little perspective. I love Mary Oliver’s poetry because, while she doesn’t flinch from the ugliness in life, she also doesn’t ignore the wonder of life. Sometimes, that is what we must cling to.
Wishing everyone a more peaceful year than we’ve had in recent years.
Thank you, Charlotte. How did I not know that Mary Oliver poem?! I hope you are having a peaceful start to your new year.
Thanks. So perfectly and lovingly expressed .
