Today is the birth day of John Lennon. I was not much of a Beatles fan but I remember buying the “Something” single when I was about 12 but then didn’t buy anything Beatles again until the 80s when I bought a greatest hits album. ( I tended more toward The Rolling Stones. Still do.) But everyone had a “favorite Beatle” back then and mine was…..George. Who wrote “Something”. He’s still my favorite Beatle but I got into John Lennon’s music after he was killed and bought a CD collection of his music. I played it repeatedly for, I don’t know, months maybe. I’m listening to it now. All the songs are exquisite, the lyrics touching and extraordinary. So I became a bit of a fan of his work. “Jealous Guy” is my favorite Lennon song (see below) because what woman could resist lyrics like that? Such vulnerability. The photo below is from my CD case and, yes, I still listen to CDs. I saw a meme on Facebook the other day of a CD case like mine that said, “I am this many years old.” It made me laugh. Laughing is good.
I think John and Yoko’s love story is one of the greatest. It’s clear in any video from back then that they loved each other and weren’t afraid to show it. I watched a documentary about their collaboration on the Imagine album on Apple+ that I recommend, Above Us Only Sky. It was SO interesting! In fact, I think I’ll watch it again.
It’s funny. It appears I’ve entered the oldster portion of my music life. I’ve never heard of many of the pop “stars” today and when I (try) to listen to current pop music I just can’t relate. It seems Country music is more relatable to me now so I’m discovering new-to-me artists and that’s fun. And there’s always my CD’s waiting in their snug but tattered case. :)
Charlotte, we are soul sisters. Even though you are a Stones girl and I am a Beatles girl. Even though George was (is) your favorite, and mine was (is) John. With a preacher’s fervor I tell anyone who will listen to watch Above Us Only Sky. It transformed my little girl’s idol of him ( then later disappointment in him) into a deep admiration of the beautiful, complex person he was and helped me understand a love story that was shaped and distorted by the press. Happy belated birthday to John. And while it’s so hard to pick a favorite, I think the song of his I love now, more than ever, is Imagine.
We had the best music. 🔥
